The Legacy of Mohammed bin Saud: Founder of the First Saudi State
More than 270 years ago, the Arabian Peninsula witnessed a significant historical event with the establishment of the First Saudi State by Imam Mohammed bin Saud bin Mohammed bin Muqrin, the first ruler of the House of Saud. Mohammed bin Saud was born in 1090 AH/1679 AD and assumed the governorship of Diriyah in 1139 AH/1727 AD following the death of his father, Saud the Elder.
Mohammed bin Saud succeeded in unifying vast areas of Najd under the banner of Diriyah, which he made the capital of his emirate. In 1157 AH/1744 AD, he signed a historic agreement with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Wahhab, laying the foundation for the establishment of the First Saudi State that ruled most of the Arabian Peninsula for over a century.
Mohammed bin Saud is considered a pivotal figure in Saudi history, as he laid the solid foundation for the modern Saudi state. Historians have praised his political acumen and his ability to reconcile different tribes and factions in the region.
Historian Othman bin Bishr described the Emir of Diriyah, saying: “He was a righteous, wise, resolute man with great dignity, frequently traveling, generous, praiseworthy, beloved by the people of his region, devoted to worship and charity, and constantly engaged in jihad in the path of Allah.”
Mohammed bin Saud’s rule of Diriyah lasted 40 years, during which he died in 1179 AH/1765 AD at the age of 89, to be succeeded by his son Abdulaziz as the governor of Diriyah, continuing the journey of the First Saudi State that his father had founded.
