Sheikh Saleh: A Great Scholar’s Passing Leaves Lasting Impact on the Kingdom

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lost one of its most prominent religious scholars, Sheikh Saleh bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al Sheikh, at the age of 90. Sheikh Saleh was born in Riyadh in 1933 and grew up in a family of scholars, as his father was one of the Kingdom’s senior scholars and sheikhs.
Sheikh Saleh received his primary education in Riyadh schools, then enrolled at the College of Sharia in Mecca, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Sharia. He continued his postgraduate studies at the Islamic University in Medina, where he earned a master’s degree in jurisprudence, followed by a doctorate in Islamic studies from Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
Sheikh Saleh held numerous academic and religious positions throughout his distinguished career. He worked as a teacher at the College of Sharia at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University, then was appointed dean of the college. He also served as a member of the Council of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia, a member of the Permanent Committee for Fatwa, and president of the scientific council of the Muslim World League.
Sheikh Saleh was known for his vast knowledge and moderate fatwas, and he played a prominent role in promoting moderation and balance in Islamic thought. He authored numerous books and publications in jurisprudence, creed, and prophetic biography, the most notable of which were “The Major Jurisprudence Rules” and “The Doctrinal Foundations of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah.”
In a 2018 statement, Sheikh Saleh said: “Islam is a moderate and balanced religion that calls for tolerance and peaceful coexistence among people, and fights extremism and excess in all their forms.”
Sheikh Saleh’s works exceeded 50 books, in addition to hundreds of lectures and scientific lessons he delivered across the Islamic world. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his academic career, including the King Faisal International Prize in Islamic Studies in 2010.
Sheikh Saleh is considered one of the most prominent scholars who contributed to spreading Islamic knowledge and moderate thought in the Kingdom and the Islamic world. He left behind a massive scientific legacy and students who benefited from his knowledge and jurisprudence across the world.
With Sheikh Saleh’s passing, the Kingdom has lost one of its intellectual and religious figures who dedicated his life to serving Islam and Muslims, and spreading moderation and balance in Islamic thought. May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Saleh, grant him a spacious paradise, and inspire his family, students, and loved ones with patience and solace.
