The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has launched the “Salem” initiative aimed at developing the agricultural and livestock sectors in the Kingdom, as part of Vision 2030 to achieve food security and sustainable development.
The ministry’s official spokesperson, Engineer Abdullah Al-Abdulkader, explained that the initiative targets increasing local production of strategic crops such as grains, vegetables, and fruits, in addition to improving livestock productivity in terms of meat, milk, and eggs. Al-Abdulkader confirmed that “Salem” seeks to enhance the efficiency of water resource usage and rationalize it in the agricultural sector through adopting modern irrigation techniques and organic farming.
The initiative relies on several development projects, including establishing grain silos and cold chains to preserve agricultural products, launching a support program for small farmers and livestock breeders, and organizing specialized agricultural exhibitions. It also includes providing agricultural extension services and transferring modern technologies to farmers.
Al-Abdulkader pointed out that “Salem” comes as a continuation of the ministry’s efforts to enhance agricultural investment and achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural crops, while increasing the sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product. The initiative aims to raise the self-sufficiency rate for certain crops to 60% within the next five years.
This initiative comes within the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance food security and achieve environmental sustainability and comprehensive agricultural development, in line with the goals of Vision 2030.
