In fiery statements during the pre-match press conference ahead of Milan’s game against Newcastle in the first round of the Champions League, Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli confirmed that the departure of veteran Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the team was a difficult matter, noting that the competition in this season’s European tournament will be completely different.
Pioli said in his statements: “Ibrahimovic’s departure was very difficult for the team, he is an exceptional player and a leadership figure, but we must move forward and achieve our goals,” adding: “The Champions League will be different this season, we are preparing for strong confrontations and will do our utmost to excel.”
Ibrahimovic had announced his retirement from football at the end of last season after a career full of achievements with Milan, where he contributed to leading the team to win the Italian League in the 2021-2022 season, before returning again in the 2023-2024 season, but his participation was limited due to recurring injuries.
Milan is preparing to face Newcastle United at the San Siro Stadium in the first round of the group stage of the Champions League, amid great ambitions to achieve a positive result that helps the team start strongly in the continental tournament.
It is worth noting that Milan is participating in the Champions League after a long absence, as its last participation was in the 2013-2014 season, and the team is seeking this season to compete strongly for the title under the leadership of its coach Pioli and young stars like Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud.
