Saudi National Day: Commemorating the Unification of the Kingdom on February 22
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates National Day on February 22 each year, marking the anniversary of the country’s unification under King Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1932, when he issued a royal decree to unite the nation under the name of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
On this day every year, the streets and squares of Saudi cities are adorned with green flags and images of scholars and King Salman bin Abdulaziz, celebrating this precious national occasion. Citizens and residents organize numerous celebratory events and activities, including air, sea, and land shows, fireworks displays, folk festivals, musical concerts, and more.
Saudi Minister of Culture, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud, said in a statement on the occasion of National Day: “National Day is an occasion that we all take pride in as Saudis, for it is a day when we remember King Abdulaziz Al Saud’s efforts in unifying the country and establishing the third Saudi state, and we draw inspiration from it for determination and resolve to continue the development and prosperity journey that the Kingdom is witnessing under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and his faithful Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.”
The minister added: “National Day is also an opportunity to renew loyalty and belonging to the dear homeland, express our love and pride for it, and stand united behind our wise leadership in facing challenges and achieving the aspirations of our generous people.”
The General Authority for Statistics has released data showing that the population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reached 35 million people by the end of 2022, an increase of 2.3% compared to the previous year, according to population estimates. The data also indicated that the number of Saudi citizens reached approximately 21 million, representing 60% of the total population, while the number of foreign residents reached about 14 million, representing 40%.
In this context, the official spokesperson for the General Authority for Statistics, Taysir Al-Mufarrej, said that “the population growth witnessed by the Kingdom reflects the political, security, economic, and social stability it enjoys, as well as its attractiveness to investments and competencies from various countries around the world. This growth also contributes to enhancing the Kingdom’s role as an important regional and international center in various fields.”
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its 92nd National Day this year, as the first official celebration of this occasion was in 1965, by order of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz. Since then, National Day has become an official holiday in all government and private sectors, and receives widespread attention from both citizens and residents alike.
In conclusion, Saudi National Day is a precious national occasion close to the hearts of all Saudis, during which they remember their glorious history and the sacrifices of their fathers and grandfathers in unifying the country and building the modern state. It is also an opportunity to express loyalty and belonging to the dear homeland and look forward to a brighter and more prosperous future under the green banner of unification.
